The Swedish MXSM motocross championship kicks off this Friday in Saxtorp.
Reigning champion Martine Hughes is not currently on the starting list. Matilda Huss is among the favorites; the two-time champion and Husqvarna Scandinavia rider is aiming to return to winning ways.
Malou Jakobsen will be present for this opening round. The Dane has been building momentum with each race and will be looking to confirm her current form. We should also get some early answers from Tyra Bäckström. The Swede is aiming to climb the rankings and could be in contention for a podium finish, along with Natalie Kane. The Irish rider, who made an impressive comeback last year, is definitely one to watch.
Barbara Aagaard Andersen continues to race regularly as she works her way back to top form. A strong result here would give her a solid start to the championship. Jenny Engeland impressed in the second round of the EMX Women’s European Championship, and the Norwegian rider could be a contender for a top-five finish — or even better. Her compatriot, Mathea Selebø, will also be a serious rival. The 2022 European champion begins her season this weekend.
Several other riders will be worth keeping an eye on: Elsa Andersson, now riding a Yamaha 250; Tiril Ottesen, who has been delivering strong performances since the start of the EMX Women’s 125 European Championship season; Louise Eriksen’s desire to perform and Hilda Sjöberg, who is making her return to competition — along with many others in what promises to be a highly competitive championship.
