Martinez takes Bibione Sand Storm victory after Fontanesi’s misfortune

Mathilde Martinez came out on top at the Bibione Sand Storm, securing a major result in the second round of the FIM Sand Races World Championship.

Kiara Fontanesi initially looked set to dominate the event after winning the opening race ahead of Martinez and Mathilde Denis. The six-time WMX World Champion was also in control of the second race, building a comfortable advantage before her hopes of another victory were dashed by a mechanical issue.

Fontanesi’s bike failed to restart during a refuelling stop, forcing her out of the race and handing Martinez the opportunity to take the win in Bibione.

Martinez made the most of the situation, finishing ahead of defending champion Denis, who had to settle for third overall behind Fontanesi.

The result also strengthens Martinez’s position at the top of the championship standings, giving the French rider an additional boost in the fight for the 2026 title.
