During yesterday’s Board meeting, Giuseppe Luongo officially confirmed his retirement from his role as President of Infront Moto Racing. David Luongo has been appointed as the new President, ensuring continuity and long-term stability for the MXGP structure.
A pioneer of modern motocross
For more than four decades, Giuseppe Luongo has been the driving force behind the evolution of modern motocross. Under his leadership, the sport experienced major developments in regulations, event management, infrastructure, and global media coverage.
Luongo began his journey as a motocross rider before becoming team owner of the Suzuki factory team from 1989 to 1992, where he recruited a young Stefan Everts. Over his extraordinary 42-year career as a world championship promoter, Luongo organised more than 800 events, including Grand Prix rounds, European Championships and Nations events.
He also founded and promoted several key series in the sport:
- The European Motocross Championship in its modern format
- The FIM SuperMoto World Championship
- The FIM Women’s World Championship
- The Masters of Motocross
- The Supercross World Championship
Throughout his career, he also organised multiple FIM World Champions’ Awards ceremonies.
A vision that reshaped the sport
From an early age, Luongo dedicated his life to motocross with one clear ambition: giving the sport global visibility. Recognising early the importance of media exposure, he pushed motocross onto television screens worldwide and later launched the groundbreaking MXGP-TV.com live streaming platform in 2011—making motocross one of the first world championships to offer live digital coverage.
His key innovations include:
Live global TV broadcasting
- A structured development pyramid from European ranks to MXGP
- Safer, modernised paddock and pit-lane structures
- Improved circuit safety standards
- The iconic double-floor pit lane and Skybox environment
After 50 years in motocross—eight as a rider and 42 as a promoter—Luongo reflected emotionally on his departure, expressing his gratitude to the community and confirming he will continue following the sport closely.
A smooth transition toward the future
Giuseppe Luongo praised the new leadership, expressing full confidence in David Luongo and Infront Moto Racing CEO Daniele Rizzi, highlighting their vision, youth, and capacity to bring new ideas and innovations to the sport while maintaining its core values.
The WMX World Championship
Giuseppe Luongo made history by creating the WMX World Championship. But he’s also the one who restarted the championship from scratch in 2011 by deciding to include women in the MX3 championship. This poor choice cost many riders contracts, some of whom were with factory teams. Even though the level of the WMX championship has never been higher than it is today, factory teams are no longer interested in female riders, and only a few manage to join teams. As a result, only a handful of riders can make a living from motocross.
